‘As the oil dripped from Aaron’s heard and down to his garments,
that’s how you must love Brian.’
That was the Lord’s instruction to me a few years ago, at a time when I was so fed up in my marriage. All I wanted to do at the time was to run as far away from my husband as possible! So I reminded the Lord about how I felt, because after all, I was complaining to Him about Brian’s behavior. I was, after all, expecting some sympathy from Him (God)! The next thing He said was ‘He must be dripping with your love.’ What? He was completely ignoring everything I said! However, I eventually caught His drift and submitted to Him. I said ‘Ok Lord, I will do it, but I don’t know how to. Teach me!' And He did!
My Lessons began with two tasks that He gave me:
Study the Scriptures and see how Jesus dealt with strife
Meditate on every love scripture
In obedience, I set my heart to learn how to love and began my study. I was amazed as the Spirit of the Lord began to teach me and opened my eyes to the truth.
The next few weeks, I am going to teach you the lessons I learned from the Lord. But before I go into the Love lessons, per se, it is very important to lay some groundwork.
Before we can embark on any study of scripture, it is important to seek revelation, understanding and wisdom from the Holy Spirit who is our Teacher and Counsellor. It’s one thing to have knowledge, but knowledge without application is useless. Therefore, we must also be able to understand the scriptures and have wisdom to apply it.
Praying Ephesians 1.18-19 and Colossians 1.9 is a good place to start. You can use the following prayer.
Pray Ephesians 1.18-19 and Colossians 1.9 (from the Amplified Bible)
Father God, in Jesus name I pray that You will grant to me a spirit of wisdom and revelation. Grant to me insight into mysteries and secrets in the deep and intimate knowledge of You. Give me deep and clear knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and comprehensive insight into Your ways and purposes. Enlighten the eyes of my understanding. Granting to me understanding and discernment of spiritual things, that I may walk and live and conduct myself in a manner that is worthy of You Lord. May I fully please You and [j]desire to please You in all things. May I bear fruit in every good work and steadily grow and increase in and by the knowledge of You.
Next week we will look at the how Jesus dealt with strife.
